オークショット「自由の政治経済学」（１）「欠乏からの自由」
自由とは何か、この抽象的に提起された問いによって、ただ詭弁（きべん）という星のみが照らす果てしない屁理屈の夜にむかってドアが開け放たれるのだ。牢獄に生まれた人のように、我々はかつて経験したことのない何か（例えば欠乏からの自由）を夢み、その夢を我々の政治の基礎とするようにせきたてられる。（オークショット「自由の政治経済学」名和田是彦訳：『政治における合理主義』（勁草書房）、 p. 44 ） 「自由とは何か」を考えること自体に問題があるのではない。問題なのは、この問いに対する解答がどんどん拡張され、詭弁塗（まみ）れになってきていることである。当たり前だが、「表現の自由」といった我々の日常に関わる「自由」と、「欠乏からの自由」などという一体どこに終着点があるのか分からない抽象的な「自由」とは分けて考える必要がある。 因（ちな）みに、「欠乏からの自由」という言葉は、ルーズベルトの一般教書演説の中に出て来る。 In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
